AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

 

The Engineering Department is a division of the Department of Engineering and Public Services, with offices located on the first floor of City Hall, 120 East First Street. The six-person professional staff currently includes one licensed professional engineer (Department Director), two engineering technicians that are responsible for a variety of project management and design tasks, survey crew leader, construction, inspector, a computer aided design / geographic information systems section leader. In addition, the Engineering Department and Public Services Departmental Aides are both available to assist customers in both departments as well. Peak season staffing and specialty project needs are also met through the use of consulting firms and college interns as needs require.

The primary responsibility of the Engineering Department is to plan and maintain the City's infrastructure system, including streets, water mains, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, parking lots, bridges, dams, retaining walls, airport, and park facilities. The Engineering Department also provides technical support and responds to the needs of the Mayor and City Council and other City departments by scheduling and implementing activities that support the goals articulated by the City Council. To achieve this, the Engineering Department prepares and updates various standards and specifications that affect the City's infrastructure. The majority of City projects are surveyed, designed, inspected, and administered with the in-house staff. The Department also processes permits for excavations within public rights-of-way, connections to sanitary and storm sewers, and oversize / overweight vehicle moves.

The Engineering Department coordinates maintenance of the City's geographic information system (GIS), which can be used to assist the public with a variety of tasks including utility locations, property mapping, aerial photographs, and flood mapping, The Department coordinates the agenda for the Mayor's Traffic committee, which reviews any regulatory changes on the City's roadways, and maintains traffic counts and crash data for various roadways within the City. The Engineering Department serves as the map repository for the Federal Flood Insurance Rate Maps produced by FEMA as well.
