The Monroe Police Department has over 160 years of history and proud service to the citizens of Monroe. Created in 1837, the Monroe Police Department constantly strives to maintain the highest possible level of service. With modern technology and innovative training, the Monroe Police Department continues as a leader in law enforcement. Currently, the Monroe Police Department is Monroe County's only C.A.L.E.A. accredited police agency.
From its beginnings in 1837, the Monroe Police Department has grown to a staff of 48 sworn officers with 10 civilian support personnel. Civilians are utilized to maintain records, parking enforcement, computers and management of the patrol vehicles. This allows sworn officers more time for law enforcement and community related activities.
The heart of the department is the uniform road patrol. These officers are assigned to one of three main shifts providing 24 - hour police coverage. Supplementing the road patrol are several specialized areas which officers can apply for. These areas include:
- Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force
- School Resource Officer
- Detective Bureau
- Court Officer
- Juvenile Officer
- K-9 Unit
- Motorcycle Units
Even if not assigned to a specialized area, road patrol officers average over 100 hours of training annually. We have road officers qualified as Evidence Technicians, Accident Specialists, Firearms Instructors, PPCT Instructors and Bicycle Officers to name a few.
The department is housed in a modern facility, shared with the Monroe County Sheriff Department. The facility includes a weight room, indoor shooting range, and training room. It is located in the heart of downtown Monroe, adjacent to City Hall and the Courthouse.
Equipment available to the officers is state of art. Patrol cars are computer equipped, giving officer’s LEIN access and the ability to communicate with any police agency in Monroe County. Reports are computer generated and the police station has Internet Capability. Photographic evidence is caught on digital cameras and traffic units use both radar and laser. These are just a few of the technological advancements in use by the Department.
The City of Monroe itself offers many amenities. Situated on Lake Erie in Southeast Michigan, Monroe is within easy access to the Detroit and Toledo, Ohio metropolitan areas, yet far enough away to maintain the "small town" atmosphere. The City is 10.5 square miles and home to 23,000 residents. Monroe’s principle employers include MAC Steel, Visteon, Detroit Edison and La-Z-Boy World Headquarters.
Rich in history, Monroe also boasts two museums and a Theatrical Center. For those with outdoor interests, Monroe is known as the "Walleye Capital of the World". Quality schools, a municipal ice rink, airport and softball complex all make Monroe an ideal place to live and raise a family.
Officers are represented by the Monroe Patrolman’s Association and enjoy a very competitive benefits package. Starting base-salary is $38,683; and after 4 years $54,525. After eight years of service, patrol officers obtain a Corporal ranking with a raise in pay to a base wage of $54,792.

All applicants must be 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States. Must have a diploma from an accredited high school or its equivalency. Applicants must be MCOLES certified or certifiable. The candidate must possess normal visual acuity. Distance vision must be 20/40 or better uncorrected for each eye. 20/20 each eye separate with correction. Visual field must be normal. Must be able to pass color vision.
Prior to being hired, applicants will undergo a complete medical and psychiatric examination. A complete background investigation will be completed including education, employment background, personal traits and driving record. Applicants will also be tested for illegal drug use as permitted by law. An applicant’s reputation and work record should be above reproach.
The Monroe Police Department is a member of the Law Enforcement Hiring Consortium. Together with a number of area departments, we have contracted with a private company to conduct our entry-level testing programs.
