MEMORIAL
The Monroe Police Department has suffered through the loss of three officers killed in the line of duty. This page is dedicated to their memory.

| On August 19th, 1923, City motorcycle Officer Oscar Reinhardt was shot while in pursuit of a speeding auto. He was seriously wounded in the abdomen but had the strength to pull his sidearm and fire five shots at the fleeing auto. Three of the shots hit the auto and one struck one of the suspects riding inside. He was found lying on Monroe Street by a passing motorist who rushed him to the hospital. Officer Reinhardt died two hours later. It was later determined that the four suspects involved in the shooting had just robbed the Allendale Inn, in Detroit. The robbers netted $100. | On August 2, 1925 Captain Solomon Fling was killed in a car accident while pursuing bank robbers. Capt. Fling and Policeman George Lockwood were forced off the road by an unknown car, while driving on Dixie Highway, about 2 miles south of Monroe. Capt. Fling was killed almost instantly when the patrol car went out of control on the dirt road and rolled over three times. . Capt. Fling’s skull was fractured and his neck was broken. Both officers were ejected from the patrol car. Officer George Lockwood suffered injuries to the chest and a broken collarbone. | On June 28th, 1978 Robert A. Hutchinson lost his life in the line of duty. Officer Hutchinson was responding to a call that a child was in the River Raisin. Officer Hutchinson arrived at the Monroe street dam, left his patrol car, and buckled up his life jacket. With the help of a citizen, Officer Hutchinson proceeded to move out onto the dam, lost his footing and fell into the river. Officer Hutchinson was swept down the river and his body was recovered at the Macomb Street dam. Rescuers managed to restart his heart but he died seven hours later at University of Michigan Hospital, in Ann Arbor. |
